Soccer teams battle Tobacco Road
Men's squad ties Duke; Women suffer first ACC loss.

The Clemson men and women's soccer teams took on Tobacco Road rivals last week, with the men facing the Duke Blue Devils in Durham, N.C., and the women taking on the University of North Carolina Tar Heels in Clemson. While both took on similar opponents, both squads yielded different results against the two programs known more for their basketball supremacy than anything else.

During Saturday's game, Clemson fans were starting to believe in the Tigers again. The stadium had an atmosphere that rivaled the Georgia Tech game two years ago. Unfortunately, the game against Maryland Saturday was a perfect example of what can happen when an inferior team with inferior talent is allowed to remain in the game.

The Clemson men's and women's tennis seasons have just begun and both look promising. The men finished up their first event in the Blue-Gray Invitational the weekend of Sept. 12, while the women just got back from the Furman Fall Classic last weekend. The Blue-Gray Invitational took place in Montgomery, Ala.

Volleyball team struggles against Hokies; sneaks past UVA.

The Clemson women's volleyball team traveled to Blacksburg and Charlottesville, Va., last weekend for some ACC action, first playing Virginia Tech on Friday night and then Virginia on Saturday. Although the Lady Tigers did not fare so well to Virginia Tech on Friday night, losing 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 23-25), the team redeemed themselves against the Virginia Cavaliers, winning 3-2 (7-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 17-15).

The Ping-Golfweek Preview is slated as the best tournament in the collegiate golf fall schedule and the youthful Tigers are once again proving that their number six national ranking may not fairly represent the amount of talent that these players possess. The star-studded lineups for the Preview boast 11 of the nation's top 13 teams with only top-ranked UCLA and fifth-ranked Stanford missing from the field.

Clemson at Wake Forest

Clemson will take on nationally ranked Wake Forest in its first true road game of the year on Thursday night. Clemson has historically dominated the Demon Deacons. Clemson leads 56-16-1 overall in a series that dates back to 1933. In the Tommy Bowden era, Clemson also leads the series 7-2.

When the NCAA decides to change rules in college football, there is usually a small backlash, but people tend to forget about the changes and accept them as part of the game. But this year is different; the new clock rules put in place have changed the way the game is played too much and is ultimately robbing fans of good college football.
