Clemson University's TAPS yearbook continues its tradition of success after being named the nation's best collegiate publication for the fourth year in a row.
In addition to being awarded first place with special merit by the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA), the 2007-2008 TAPS edition received ASPA's honor of Most Outstanding University Yearbook.
The two awards mark the highest forms of recognition given by the ASPA.
Taps Managing Co-Editor Chrissy Dombrowski, a senior studying English, said she is pleased by the first place award. "I'm very proud of what last year's staff was able to accomplish. I know we all worked hard on that book, and we plan to do the same this year."
The ASPA judges based their awards on a variety of criteria that takes into consideration the yearbook's page design, story layouts, graphics, cover design, photography and overall content.
As Clemson's official annual, TAPS covers the yearly concerts, news, athletic events, academic developments and student achievements that occur on the University's campus.
Dombrowski said among the goals of the TAPS staff is to make all students feel included in the yearbook, which has now become a Clemson tradition.
"The TAPS staff works hard the entire year to record the events on Clemson's campus that mean the most to the student body," she said.
"Just think, in 20 years you won't be reading that outdated text book the bookstore wouldn't buy back; you will want to take your yearbook from the shelf, flip through the pages and remember the best four or five years of your life at Clemson."
Senior business management major Katherine Holland is managing co-editor alongside Dombrowski.
Both women have been members of the TAPS staff since their freshman year at Clemson and have seen the progression of the yearbook's design.
Holland said she is equally excited about TAPS's achievements and credits the award to the hard work of the staff.
"TAPS has a great working environment," said Holland.
"I believe that members of [the TAPS staff] are able to create award winning yearbooks year after year because everyone knows the importance of the yearbook. Basically, there is no guarantee that we will remember everything that went on in college, but having a yearbook to look through will definitely help assist all the memories come back to life."
