Drought engulfs city

Campus implements detailed plan to conserve water.

With the waters of Lake Hartwell falling to a record low, Clemson University has transitioned into the "Severe Drought" phase of its Drought Management Plan. During the past 12 months, the city has received 62 percent less rainfall than normal, resulting in a 23-inch deficit and threatening the Hartwell reserves where Clemson draws its potable water.

CAT changes cause confusion

New transit route leaves room for improvement.

Both commuters and those who cannot muster the energy to cross the Lightsey Bridge on foot have no doubt noticed a change in the Clemson Area Transit (CAT) system serving Clemson's campus. Less than a month before classes began on Aug. 20, University and CAT officials collectively approved and implemented the new Tiger Route.

As of July 1, 2008, smokers in the city of Clemson have had to pay close attention to where they light up - or else risk legal repercussions. The much-discussed smoking ban officially went into effect earlier this summer, prohibiting smoking in public enclosed areas such as bars and restaurants.

Campus home to first SC Apple store

On June 13, 2008, the first Apple store in South Carolina officially opened its doors in Clemson University's Edgar A. Brown Student Union. The visionary result of Vice Provost and Clemson Computing Information Technology (CCIT) CIO Jim Bottum, the Clemson Apple Store came to fruition after a surge in both faculty and student interest, after CCIT approved of the idea of opening an Apple store on Clemson's campus last year.

National Report ? Three Florida homeless people were hurt, with two hospitalized in critical condition, after they were beaten by four teenagers on Aug. 25. St. Augustine deputies said the transients were approached while they were sleeping underneath a railroad bridge and beaten with a board, a shopping cart and other objects.

Construction hinders travel

Those traveling to Atlanta this weekend should expect delays.

Downtown Atlanta will undergo major Interstate reconstruction during Labor Day weekend. With the Clemson Tigers scheduled to face the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in the Georgia Dome on Saturday, fans traveling to the first football game of the season can expect more traffic delays than usual.
