Retro-chic fashions hit the streets
PRINT | SHARE

There has always been that nerdy guy or girl at school. You know, the one with thick-rimmed glasses, tightly-belted, high-waisted pants and socks pulled up a little bit too far. Well, this summer, it seems those nerdy kids may have caught on to a new trend that left us cool kids in the dust.

Fashion bloggers have been freaking out over thick, black-rimmed glasses that are slightly reminiscent of Steve Urkel. The retro style of the 80s have been re-entering mainstream style, and these glasses are no exception.

Starting with celebrities, as it always does, nerd glasses have been rocked all season by Lady Gaga, Scarlett Johansson and P. Diddy. While looking white and nerdy may end up being a short-lived trend, it has certainly proved to be an interesting spectacle.

Keeping with the 80s theme, we can move on to blazers. Yes, blazers with shoulder pads and all. Throw out that old copy of the Working Girl version of blazers and replace it with one of this season’s hottest accessories.

The blazer has appeared many times on the runway this spring, and while these jackets may remind you of power pumps and frizzy 80s hair, it is much more sleek and sophisticated than past versions. It’s fairly versatile and can be paired with jeans and flip-flops or dressed up and worn with dresses or skirts.

Other previously nerdy trends have become hot, such as high-waisted skirts, pants and shorts.

I remember the days of loathing any item of clothing that went past the hips, thinking only old people or those completely out of touch with reality wore pants or skirts above their belly button.

However, now it’s as though the tides have turned, and while low-waisted skirts and pants haven’t completely cycled out, they are certainly not getting the attention they used to.

Although high-waisted bottoms have been in style for sometime, they have recently hit the streets of Clemson with a vengeance.

These 40s and 50s throw-back fashions can look good on any shape or size, and seeing as thin and thick belts are in style as well, an outfit can easily be thrown together. So make Audrey Hepburn proud and sport that high-waisted pair of shorts, everyone else is doing it…

Take a fashion risk this summer and look nerdy – it may be cooler than you think.
